Japanese technology giant Sony has reportedly decided to pull the plug on PlayStation Store for PS3 and Vita consoles. The company will shut down the PlayStation Store for PS3 on July 2 and for Vita on August 27, as per a report by The Verge. After the Stores get shut down, PS3 and Vita owners won’t be able to purchase the digital copies of any game or DLC on both the platforms. Sony will also remove the purchase option for PlayStation Portable on July 2 only. So, in brief, no new games, in-game purchases or other content could be downloaded for the PS3 and PSP after July 2. Same goes for Vita after August 27.
You would still be able to download the games you previously purchased on the PS3 or Vita though. This also extends to videos and other media content. Also, despite the PS Stores closing down for the three devices, you can still buy the games that come with cross-buy support and download other digital content.
Of the three devices, PS3 and PSP were received favourably upon launch while Vita wasn’t that much of a hit. Sony launched the PS3 in 2006 and over 80 million copies of the gaming console have been sold since its launch. The PlayStation 4 had a string of successful games last year like The Last of Us: Part II, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Doom Eternal, Ghost of Tsushima, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla etc. with The Last of Us: Part II, Ghost of Tsushima, Yakuza and Final Fantasy being PS4-exclusives.
