DATA STORY: India reports 59,118 Covid cases, most in a day since Oct 18

India on Friday reported a net increase of 25,874 in active cases to take its count to 421,066. That is 41.37 per cent of the September 18 peak of 1,017,754. India’s share of global active cases now stands at 1.95 per cent (one in 51). The country is 8th among the most affected countries by active cases. On Friday, it added 59,118 cases, the most in a day since October 18, to take its total caseload to 11,846,652. And, with 257 new fatalities, its Covid-19 reached 160,949, or 1.36 per cent of total confirmed infections.


With 2,358,731 more people getting Covid-19 vaccine shots on Thursday, India’s total count of those inoculated reached 55,504,440. The count of recovered cases across India, meanwhile, reached 11,264,637 – or 95.09 per cent of total caseload – with 32,987 new cured cases being reported on Friday.



  • With a daily increase of 59,118 in total cases, the most in a day since October 18, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 11,787,534 on Thursday to 11,846,652 – an increase of 0.5%. has reached 160,949, with 257 fatalities in a day. Now the eighth-most-affected country by active cases, fourth by fatality, third by total, and second by recovered cases, India has added 332,321 cases in the past 7 days.

  • India now accounts for 1.95% of all active cases globally (one in every 51 active cases), and 5.82% of all deaths (one in every 17 deaths).

  • India has so far vaccinated 55,504,440 people. That is 468.55 per cent of its total caseload, and 3.9934 per cent of its population.

  • Among Indian states, the top 5 in terms of number of vaccine shots administered are Maharashtra (9972734), Rajasthan (9810493), Uttar Pradesh (9676313), Gujarat (8592427), and Gujarat (8497576).

  • Backwards from here, the last 1 million cases for India have come in 46 days.

  • The count of active cases across India saw a net increase of 25,874 on Friday, compared with 26,735 on Thursday. States that have seen the biggest daily net increase in active cases are Maharashtra (15397), Chhattisgarh (1384), Karnataka (1321), Madhya Pradesh (957), and Punjab (883).

  • With 32,987 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate stands at 95.09%, while fatality rate has come down marginally to 1.36%.

  • The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (2.92%), Sikkim (2.17%), and Maharashtra (2.07%). The rate in as many as 15 is higher than the national average.

  • India’s new daily closed cases stand at 33,244 — 257 deaths and 32,987 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 0.77%.

  • India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 0.4%.

  • India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 138.6 days, and for deaths at 433.7 days.

  • Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Maharashtra (35952), Punjab (2661), Karnataka (2523), Chhattisgarh (2419), and Kerala (1989).

  • Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Punjab (87.48%), Maharashtra (87.78%), Madhya Pradesh (94.71%), Chhattisgarh (94.78%), and Himachal Pradesh (95.24%).

  • India on Thursday conducted 1,100,756 to take the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 238,604,638. The test positivity rate recorded was 5.4%.

  • Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases – are Maharashtra (13.78%), Goa (10.73%), Ladakh (9.04%), Nagaland (9.02%), and Kerala (8.65%).

  • Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Maharashtra (23.43%), Chandigarh (11.2%), Goa (8.63%), Madhya Pradesh (6.9%), and Punjab (6.51%).

  • Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (713955), J&K (443718), Kerala (366170), Karnataka (315854), and Andhra Pradesh (284859).

  • The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (2600833), Kerala (1111897), Karnataka (978478), Andhra Pradesh (895879), and Tamil Nadu (873219).

  • Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 35,952 new cases to take its tally to 2600833. The state has added 271,369 cases in the past 10 days.

  • Kerala, the second-most-affected state by total tally, has added 1989 cases to take its tally to 1111897.

  • Karnataka, the third-most-affected state, has reported 2523 cases to take its tally to 978478.

  • Andhra Pradesh has added 758 cases to take its tally to 895879.

  • Tamil Nadu has seen its tally going up by 1779 to 873219.

  • Delhi has added 1515 cases to take its tally to 652742.

  • Uttar Pradesh has added 830 cases to take its tally to 610273.
