The covid crisis has led to millions of people struggling with hunger in the worst possible circumstances ever. During such dire times, an eatery in Delhi has taken the noble initiative to feed a wholesome meal to the needy at just Rs 1 per plate. Located in Nangloi, Shyam Rasoi serves a full lunch thali to people queuing up from 11 AM to 1 PM.

Parvin Kumar Goyal who is running Shyam Rasoi for the last four months told ANI, “Daily we feed 1,000 to 1,100 people here and also provide parcels in nearby areas such as Inderlok, Sai Mandir, via three e-rickshaws. Altogether around 2,000 Delhiites eat here from Shyam ki Rasoi (sic).”
In case you were wondering what all they serve in just one rupee, hold on! From soya pulao to paneer and halwa, they have it all. However, their menu keeps changing every day.

The 51-year-old further said, “We get donations from people. Yesterday an old lady came and offered us ration, another day somebody gave us wheat, and thus we are running it for the last four months. People do help us via digital payment mode also. We have the capacity to run for seven more days. Also, I request all to help us with ration and continue this service (sic).”
While initially, they charged Rs 10 per plate, it was later revised to just Rs 1 to draw more customers and be made more easily accessible. Parveen currently has 5-6 helpers and at times, even college students drop by to help him serve the customers.

Ranjeet Singh, a businessman who let Praveen use the vacant factory space for this cause, said, “Since NGT (National Green Tribunal) has closed down the factory, it was lying vacant. When he came to me, I gave him this space. We do not take cash from anybody. It’s open for donation and even through digital payment mode but we won’t take cash. Many people from this area come here to eat regularly and we are happy (sic).”
In the end, it’s all about coming together in such dire times, and letting humanity prevail. This great initiative brings hope and instills faith in mankind. Kudos to Shyam Rasoi for doing their bit.
