On February 3, Hollywood actresses Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P Henson announced the film and television nominations for the 72nd annual Golden Globes, as voted for by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association – kicking off this extremely unorthodox awards season.

Streamer Netflix dominated in both categories, with 22 movie nods and 20 in TV.

In film, Mank led the way with six nominations, while The Trial of the Chicago 7 racked up five nods, and The Father, Nomadland and Promising Young Woman all took four. In TV, The Crown scored a right royal six nominations, with Schitt’s Creek on five, and Ozark and The Undoing on four.

There’s plenty of British interest this year, including Vanessa Kirby nominated for Pieces of a Woman, Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman for The Father, Carey Mulligan and Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman, Riz Ahmed for Sound of Metal, Gary Oldman for Mank, Jodie Comer for Killing Eve, Dev Patel for The Personal History of David Copperfield, Daniel Kaluuya for Judas and the Black Messiah, and multiple British nods for The Crown. Rather surprisingly, James Corden also featured for his divisive performance in The Prom. The late Chaswick Boseman is nominated for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

When is the Golden Globes 2021 awards ceremony?

The broadcast will take place on Sunday February 28 at 5pm PT/8pm ET (or 1am on March 1 UK time) – almost two months later than its normal calendar slot, due to the pandemic. Still to be confirmed is whether presenters and nominees will be there in person or operating remotely.

This year’s awards ceremony will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who last helmed the event in 2015 (as well as in 2013 and 2014). But, in a first for the Globes, it will be beamed from two different locations, with Fey broadcasting live from the Rainbow Room at the Rockefeller Center in New York, while Poehler is at the Globes’ usual home, the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California. The Oscars previously held bicoastal ceremonies in the mid-1950s.

Spike Lee’s children, Satchel and Jackson, will be the 2021 Golden Globe Ambassadors, handing out trophies to the winners.
