DATA STORY: India sees 2,263 deaths in a day; nearly 200,000 discharged

India on Friday reported a net increase of 137,188 in active coronavirus cases, the most in a day yet, to take its count to 2,428,616. India’s share of global active coronavirus cases now stands at 13.03 per cent (one in 8). The country is second among the most affected countries by active cases. On Friday, it added 332,730 cases, the highest in a day so far, to take its total caseload to 16,263,695. And, with 2,263 new fatalities, its Covid-19 death toll reached 186,920, or 1.15 per cent of total confirmed infections.

With 3,147,782 more people getting Covid-19 vaccine shots on Thursday, India’s total count of those inoculated reached 135,478,420. The count of recovered coronavirus cases across India, meanwhile, reached 13,648,159 – or 83.92 per cent of total caseload – with 193,279 new cured cases being reported on Friday.

  With a daily increase of 332,730 in total cases, the highest ever, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 15,930,965 on Thursday to 16,263,695 – an increase of 2.1%. Death toll has reached 186,920, with 2,263 fatalities, the most in a day so far. Now the second-most-affected country by active cases, total cases and recovery, and fourth by death, India has added 1,971,778 cases in the past 7 days.

  India now accounts for 13.03% of all active cases globally (one in every 8 active cases), and 5.99% of all deaths (one in every 17 deaths).

  India has so far vaccinated 135,478,420 people. That is 833.13 per cent of its total caseload, and 9.74 per cent of its population.

  Among Indian states, the top 5 in terms of number of vaccine shots administered are Maharashtra (18023807), Rajasthan (16403285), Uttar Pradesh (15913451), Gujarat (14892099), and West Bengal (13520495).

  Among states with more than 10 million population, the top 5 in number of vaccine shots per one million population are Kerala (249648), Gujarat (233154), Chhattisgarh (222669), Delhi (204221), and Uttarakhand (203787).

  The count of active cases across India on Thursday saw a net increase of 137,188, compared with 133,890 on Thursday. States that have seen the biggest daily net increase in active cases are Uttar Pradesh (20597), Karnataka (20048), Uttar Pradesh (17545), Rajasthan (10791), and Gujarat (7958).
• 
  With 193,279 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate stands at 83.92%, while fatality rate has come down marginally to 1.15%.
• 
  The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (2.56%), Sikkim (1.97%), and West Bengal (1.54%). The rate in as many as 15 is higher than the national average.

  India’s new daily closed cases stand at 195,542 — 2,263 deaths and 193,279 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 1.16%.

  India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 1.9%.
• 
  India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 33.5 days, and for deaths at 56.9 days.

  Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Maharashtra (67013), Uttar Pradesh (34254), Kerala (26995), Delhi (26169), and Karnataka (25795).

  Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Uttar Pradesh (72.32%), Rajasthan (76.37%), Jharkhand (76.94%), Gujarat (78.41%), and Chhattisgarh (78.83%).

  India on Thursday conducted 1,740,550 coronavirus tests to take the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 274,445,653. The test positivity rate recorded was 19.1%.

  Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases – are Maharashtra (16.45%), Goa (11.91%), Ladakh (11.75%), Chandigarh (9.72%), and Nagaland (9.01%).
• 
  Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Delhi (36.24%), Goa (36.1%), Chhattisgarh (30.45%), Andhra Pradesh (25.7%), and Rajasthan (24.67%).
• 
  Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (884842), J&K (508587), Kerala (412560), Karnataka (357878), and Telangana (309314).
• 
  The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (4094840), Kerala (1322054), Karnataka (1247997), Tamil Nadu (1037711), and Andhra Pradesh (997462).
• 
  Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 67,013 new cases to take its tally to 4094840. The state has added 635,844 cases in the past 10 days.
• 
  Kerala, the second-most-affected state by total tally, has added 26,995 cases to take its tally to 1322054.
• 
  Karnataka, the third-most-affected state, has reported 25,795 cases to take its tally to 1247997.
• 
  Tamil Nadu has added 12,652 cases to take its tally to 1037711.
• 
  Andhra Pradesh has seen its tally going up by 10,759 to 997462.
• 
  Uttar Pradesh has added 34,254 cases to take its tally to 976765.
• 
  Delhi has added 26,169 cases to take its tally to 956348.
